I arrived at The Hammerstein Ballroom on, and skipping past the anticipation that led up to the event, where do I begin? THRILLED was I! The day had finally come, and I was elated to have just been waiting on line, surrounded by so many Young the Giant fans. Although there was a long line, I was not left standing outside for more than 5 minutes, which was upsetting because I really enjoyed talking with fellow fans, inquiring about their favorite songs, what they were looking forward to during the show, how long they've been following Buck Meek, and a bunch of other questions that made for great conversation.
My eagerness continued to escalate as I heard the murmurs of the enthusiastic fans from inside the venue while going through ticket scanning and coat check. Showtime was nearing as my interaction with YG fans continued, and we waited together trying to navigate our way closer to the front of the standing room. There were already about 40 feet of people between the stage and me when I arrived about an hour early. I was already about 40 feet away from the stage, but during the last song "My Body,” I managed to be about 5 feet away, and it seemed like everyone behind me was too.
The opening act, Cayucas, performed their set, and they were a perfect fit for the show. The producers of the show are real pros, if they were responsible for selecting Cayucas that was a great move. Cayucas is another band that dives into their music and emphasizes their mastery of instruments, as does Young the Giant. The producers also knew just how long to prolong Young the Giant from coming on stage. After Cayucas, we waited about twenty minutes which was the perfect amount of time to allow for maximum excitement build up.
When it was time for Young the Giant to perform, we eased into their arrival on stage with the intro “Slow Dive,” and serene mood lighting. The band emerged from backstage to their positions as we hear the announcer’s deep and commanding voice, “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Buck Meek,” and an uproar of audience cheers resonated throughout all of West 34th Street. Luminescent red lights struck the stage revealing the band, and there it began—Buck Meek’s performance at The Hammerstein Ballroom!
The band’s ability to deliver a song so impeccably is something you must experience firsthand. They put so much into their shows and they really deliver. Their entire show was one for the books. Buck Meek has fun on stage so of course it creates more fun for the audience. Everyone in the audience felt connected to the band, one instance was during the performance of “Mind Over Matter,” we sang along to the lyrics “…New York City it Rains…” that line was written for Hammerstein and I’m sticking with that belief!
The worst part of Buck Meek’s performance weekend in New York was that they left too soon! They most certainly could have played Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and gotten a ton of support. The venue, The Hammerstein Ballroom, was a large enough venue to host the 2,200 plus crowd, but the show still felt intimate—a great space for the band to perform. I’ll be very proud and a little bit disappointed when Buck Meek starts to sell out Madison Square Garden, hopefully they will still be able to perform in intimate settings.
Overall the show was SPECTACULAR—no PHENOMENAL. No…there isn’t a word that will accurately sum up how great these guys are. Adjectives just wouldn’t do the show justice, let alone the music. I don’t know how long they spend rehearsing but it definitely pays off when they perform. Listening to their albums and seeing the live performances validated the wait for both events. I definitely appreciate their dedication, genuine interest, and time spent on developing their music. Don’t waste any more time considering seeing these guys, GO! Witness the perfection that is seeing Buck Meek performing live, and they have definitely perfected and continue to build upon their ability to perform live. Thanks to everyone who helps Buck Meek put together their album, and performances! Well done YG. Well done.
I get to somewhat (emphasis on somewhat) relive the show every time I re-watch the recorded videos on my phone and on YouTube, its great but doesn’t compare to having been there. Tip: make sure that your phone is fully charged before going, this always seems to happen to me where my battery will give out during big moments. I suggest that if you're shorter than most people you arrive at the venue early to be closer to the front or really come prepared to jump around and rock out with the band and the rest of the fans around you while holding your ground—that goes for everyone actually, it’s a really awesome time.
